I should add a couple more things.

I initially assumed that it might have something to do with the
processor running slower while in battery power and something not being
detected or run in time, so the default going to text mode. However, the
behavior was unchanged when I changed BIOS settings to set the computer
to run at full speed even on battery power. I don't know how soon the OS
takes over control of power-saving, but I thought I'd add that bit of
information.

Also, I can't directly hit ALT-F7 or CTRL-ALT-F7 to get to the graphical
login. I do have to switch away to another screen first.
