Brad, thank you for that info. Can confirm Brad's fix works - can see eth0 in both gnome network manager and through ifconfig now (running 64 bit lucid updated to RC)
Some more info... Tried booting into windows 7 (pro, 32bit) and the ethernet didn't show up there either when not connected. But once I hot plugged the cable in the connection showed up in network connections (or whatever it's called). It seems the bios (?) keeps the device hidden from the OS until it's plugged in (powered down to save energy?).
