Perhaps I could try the development release from a live CD? In that case I will be happy to do some testing and let you know.
To update my original post I can now affirm that the issue is to due with the fans. These have different speeds that they can run at (e.g. speed 1, speed 2, speed 3, speed 4). After putting Ubuntu in hibernation the fans speed do not run properly as they usually do. The fans do not work at all or they work only at speed 1. Temperature reaches 80 or 90 Celsius degrees and only at that stage speed 4 kicks in for 5 seconds circa.
