I installed linux-image-2.6.34-999-generic_2.6.34-999.201004261005_i386 and booted without nomodeset and had no graphical problems. There was no colour cycling and I could log on and use the computer normally. Also, during the boot process the screen switched to its native resolution match earlier then normal (which is good)! I tested the kernel with my current install of Ubuntu version 9.10. I have not had a chance to try with the development release of Ubuntu yet. I'll try the dev release in the next week or so and see if it is OK there as well.
