I've done the updates to the latest version of Lucid (sorry for not replying 
sooner, I've been rather busy).  Just rebooted and it took 3 goes to get in: 
first time threw me straight to a maintenance shell, stating an error 725.  I 
followed the instructions above, however the output gave me a blank file.
On reboot I got a new error, 725.  Typing mountall gave me a message about this 
potentially damaging my files, so I rebooted again.
Third time everything worked fine ... it seems rather bizarre.  Could it be 
some kind of problem with my second drive (the one which /home is on, as I note 
that it can never be accessed from the maintenance shell.
