VMware's setting of XKBMODEL was one that console-setup defines as
permissible, but unfortunately xserver-xorg-input-evdev failed to handle
it. We'll fix this in a post-release update.
XKBVARIANT="U.S. English" is definitely wrong. I don't know how that
happened.
In any case, looks like bug 548891, so I'll mark this as a duplicate.
