I was able to correct the problem - but do not ask me how. I got a handle on the new init system added alot of debugging messages to trap the failure and while working on that the problem decided to go away.
I can not tell you what caused it or what curred it beyond what I have written. I would be happy to try to debug it more thoroughly in future updates - but I hope to hell it does NOT come back. I can do the steps you suggested if you wish but I have somehow magically curred the problem so I do nto know what use this would be to you. I have had vauguely similar things happen before following the bleeding edge. I used to track debian Testing, rather than the ubuntu equivalent. I would note that while Ubuntu's cutting edge offers more, it also is sharper. I have had things go wrong under debian but never lost files or had a completely unbootable system. Anyway I am pretty happy with lucid. Despite this the lucid run up is less troublesome than karmic was.
