I most say I'm don't know much about crating cross toolchains, to me it
looks like you forgot some argument to ./configure and the buildsystem
is trying to make a native i686-pc-linux-gnu compiler. You will at least
need to pass --host and --target to ./configure.

I have converted this to a question, in the hope that someone with more
knowledge in cross compiling will look into this.
