@Jeremy: will the CD image be more helpful than the internet-updated Lucid I'm running now? A live CD is needed to get the system back to a bootable state if the boot-time fsck fails (and so far it usually does). But I have an older CD lying around and that'll still do for a manual fsck... do I really need to download a new one?
