Another (hopefully helpful) observation: Looking for a solution / workaround for the annoying Thunar double-click problem (#Bug #520118 ) I installed pcmanfm2 from the Lubuntu repos. And voilà - it does not just solve the double-click bug, but perfectly handles USB drives, too.
