It seems to have been a transient hardware issue; while rebooting to the karmic kernel fixed the read errors for a little while, the drive stopped working again soon after (to the point where it was claiming to be a "DWDRAM"). A complete shutdown fixed the problem, and I haven't had any significant problems with it since, and am again running the latest lucid kernel.
