In my experience, Keyboard indicator doesn't show up on the panel if a
sub-layout is chosen on logon screen, until a (non-sub-) layout is
chosen on logon screen, AND a sub-layout is added to preferred layouts
WHILE in gnome session (THEN, on next logon you can choose a sub-layout,
and keyboard indicator will still be shown).
My 10.04 installation is fully up-to-date, and i've tried this by making
a new user and going through all the trouble...
