A friend of mine looked at the traces and proposed to move away the Tahoma font files. I did so and now thunderbird does not crash any more.
I "installed" this font files, i. e. I copied them to /usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts/: ~$ sudo ls -l /usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts/[Tt][Aa][Hh]* -r-xr-x--- 1 root root 355436 2006-12-13 15:16 /usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts/Tahomabd.ttf lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 12 2006-12-13 15:20 /usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts/tahoma_bold.ttf ->Tahomabd.ttf lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 2006-12-13 15:20 /usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts/tahoma.ttf -> Tahoma.ttf -r-xr-x--- 1 root root 383140 2006-12-13 15:16 /usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts/Tahoma.ttf I installed the tahoma font files last year but thunderbird blow off after the last system upgrade at 2007-03-10. Removing the tahoma font files is no real solution for me, since I really would like to use them.
