Binary package hint: evolution
I've run evolution for many years without making changes to any
configuration settings. Last Sunday, one of the two POP mail accounts I
use with evolution stopped getting mail. The other POP account got
fewer messages than usual. I looked with my ISP's web-mail facility a
couple times after seeing nothing new in evolution but didn't see
anything waiting. Yesterday I looked with the web-mail client BEFORE
starting evolution and saw a couple e-mails waiting for me. I started
evolution and NOTHING. I went back to the web-mail client and NOTHING.
I immediately shut down networking, opened evolution and set both
accounts to leave mail on the server. I used a web-only account I have
to send some messages to my POP accounts. Initially, nothing. I
removed a video file from my home directory to make more disk space. I
tried more test messages and a couple came through, but not all and now
I'm back to nothing.
I have, for years, moved chunks of e-mails (usually a year at a time) to
archival inboxes (e.g. inbox_2007, inbox_2008, etc.). These no longer
get mail added to them, but are available should I need to search for
something. The largest of these (inbox_2007) is 1.2GB, which is the
largest file in the .evolution/mail/local directory, and the total size
of the entire .evolution directory tree is about 5GB. My current inbox
is 360MB -- much smaller. In my home partition, I currently have 3.4GB
free.
Note that I do seem to be able to use evolution to send mail (and it
does get added to my Sent mailbox which I've never broken up by years)
and other features like address book and calendar are still working as
expected (as far as I know).
