I have exactly the same problem except that it is worse: the eject command does not open the tray either, and it cannot be unmounted. No solution found except turning off VirtualBox which is quite annnoying. I would be very thankful to any person who thinks up a patch to remedy for this. I run Ubuntu 9.04 and VirtualBox 3.1.6. If this persists, I'll have to switch back to VMWare.
