Gene, have you tried using tsched=0 in /etc/pulse/default.pa, i.e.,
changing

load-module module-udev-detect

to

load-module module-udev-detect tsched=0

Doing so will disable PA's use of timer-based buffering and instead fall
back to the traditional alsa interrupt-based mode.
