On request of Jeremy Foshee, I tested the latest Ubuntu relaease 10.04, to see if the problem persists.
I had to create swap space, and now hibernation "works" but takes unreasonably long: in a few seconds the image is written to disk, but instead of powering off correctly or auto-resuming as it did, it now waits for several minutes (screen off, fan loud, no disk access) before actually turning off correctly.
