I understand your concern. My gut reaction is, as always to fix the issue.
However, we are impacted in doing this by the SRU policy located here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates
This change does not meet the criteria for SRU inclusion in Karmic, so I
must consider it Fixed as it is working in Lucid. I hope this helps.
