@anthonycoyle: Have you tried to replace the default network manager with wicd
(simply install the "wicd" package using a package manager like synaptic or
aptitude)?
I've had a similar problem with the same chipset and switching to wicd actually
not only solved the problem but made managing network connections more
comfortable.
