I've just tried the live CD of 10.04.  Exactly the same as 9.10 -
wireless network seen but will not connect [as I suggested previously,
kernel driver suspected].

If the difference / change between 9.04 & 9.10 could be found the
problem would be resolved instantly,

I will try an install tomorrow to test the work-around I used in 9.10...
Step1: add "blacklist rt2800usb" to:
           /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
Step2: add "rt2870sta" to:
           /etc/modules
Step3: Reboot.
Step 4: Connxn works 'perfectly' [but slow].
