Okay, I think I have this diagnosed and solved (as much as I can do) This problem seems to arise from having an old version of ubuntu-netbook-remix installed, (perhaps even from Jaunty), which doesn't get removed when the newer version is installed.
The problem seems to stem from one package: libgl1-mesa-glx This cannot be removed by itself, but *by installing libgl1-mesa-swx11* * * Installing this package removes the following packages: libgl1-mesa-glx ubuntu-desktop ubuntu-netbook ubuntu-netbook-remix so I was worried that my netbook launcher would no longer function - but it works fine. After installing this package (which uninstalls the other 4), my fonts in unr are restored to normal!! (ps - this also affects gnome-shell, which is also fixed by this package.)
