It is currently *very* difficult for restricted-manager to get along
with xorg.conf changing underneath it. At the moment you should *either*
use r-m to enable/disable drivers *or* manually edit xorg.conf. This is
why it still appeared as enabled, because the last time you ran dpkg-
reconfigure xserver-xorg, you chose 'nvidia', and r-m reads this
setting.

Please use

  sudo dpkg-reconfigure -pmedium xserver-xorg

to see the other questions like keyboard layout etc.

If you use r-m to disable nvidia, it should automatically disable
compiz. This is already reported as bug 93734.
