This should not be a problem in Ubuntu 10.04... Splashy is NOT SUPPORTED -- the entire Lucid bootup process depends on Plymouth which will conflict Splashy. I have no idea how people are managing to install Splashy when it explicitly conflicts an Essential: Yes package.
