fyi, possibly implicating an issue with fglrx as well: after installing
the driver, /usr/lib32/libGL.so pointed to /usr/lib32/mesa/libGL.so.1.
so i tried:

  $ ln -sf /usr/lib32/fglrx/libGL.so.1.2 /usr/lib32/libGL.so

but it had no effect.  i believe that should be sufficient to make sure
the correct 32-bit GL library gets used, but since i got no improvement,
it may not be.  or the GL driver may be irrelevant.
