I can confirm Jan Pinkas and hforzman. Under 9.04 lid close detection didn't work. Under 9.10 it worked perfectly. Under 10.04 again, it doesn't work.
N.B. I did a clean install with each new Ubuntu version (formatting root partition, keeping /home partition). This may have an effect, as some people using 9.10 report that lid close detection doesn't work on the HP mini 2140. On my 2140 it worked with 9.10.
