I checked it in my (for testing purposes) installation of Ubuntu 10.04 x64, and it worked. What I did: 1. I "completely removed" telepathy-butterfly from Synaptic 2. restarted Empathy (you may try to log out/reboot, although I do not think it is necessary) 3. erased the previous MSN account I had created 4.
