I was able to manually kill the PID for zfs-fuse by removing it from /var/run. This allowed me to restart it normally. Incidentally, the init script has zpool import running on every startup. I think zpool import is only necessary on initial filesytem import. I comented out this line, and the init script completes for me even after experiencing the above.
