You are not able to print because cups is not initialized on boot! To check it try to do "/etc/init.d/cups status". Although it has execution rights and it is in init.d, it doesn't start by default! This has to be fixed! The fact of the buttons in Printing settings dialog are grayed isn't the true issue.
