Had the same problem wit gparted not recognising the partition table.

What happened was that I had deleted my partition table, not on purpose
ofcourse. I used 'gpart' to restore it. Gpart wrote it back to disk and
GParted did not recognise it.

After some searching I cam across 'testdisk'. Does the same as 'gpart'
but with more options IMHO. The key option that I needed in 'testdisk',
was to rewrite the MBR.

After rewriting the MBR with testdis, gparted recognised my partitions.

I was working on 8.10 (intrepid) and was upgrading to 10.4 (lucid), well
upgrading, preparing all for a reinstall...
