Dear Jeremy, following your recommendation I've installed kernel 2.6.34-999-generic. Since the nvidia driver wasn't compiled (for this kernel) I ran in low- resolution graphics mode. The suspend still doesn't work: the screen goes to 'console mode' with a blinking cursor at the upper left corner and that's it: the system hangs.
As you can see below, there's no particular problem logged into /var/log/messages before the suspend attempt: (/var/log/messages: end of 2.6.34-999 'session' and the beginning of the standard kernel 'session' after a hard reboot): May 4 14:17:31 my-laptop kernel: [ 37.925055] EXT3-fs (sda3): using internal journal May 4 14:17:31 my-laptop kernel: [ 38.172184] HDA Intel 0000:00:1b.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 20 (level, low) -> IRQ 20 May 4 14:17:31 my-laptop kernel: [ 38.193375] hfs: write access to a journaled filesystem is not supported, use the force option at your own risk, mounting read-only.
