Solved it.

Seems like the plasma desktop was missing.  Issuing "sudo apt-get
install kubuntu-desktop" fixed it.

Solution inspired by "oblivion"
(http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=3108871.21).

> ... check if you have installed kubuntu-desktop. If not, open the KRunner via 
> ALT+F2 and run "Konsole" from 
> there and then install the kubuntu desktop via apt-get:

Then log out and back in again and presto! A working desktop.
