Solved the problem with 'dosfsck -a -w /dev/sdb'.
Why this vfat file system error only created problems in the 10.04 and
not 8.04 might be some kind of better and more fine grained vfat support
exposing the problem in 10.04. Me wild-guessing.
Everything is running happily ever after for my iAudio U3 and Ubuntu
10.04 now.
