Same problem on my HP EliteBook 6930p after upgrading to Lucid. The fix 
proposed by progre55 above didn't work.
Interestingly, the key combination for switching brightness adaptation on/off 
(Fn+F11, right next to Fn+F9/F10 for manual adjustment) still seems to work - 
at least there's a change in brightness when I toggle it.
