Similar symptoms here, on fresh install of Kubuntu 10.04 AMD64. Akonadi self test report attached. This is on restart after updates (including kernel, hence the restart), and the Akonadi in system tray said it was running. Kontact started, but Contacts didn't; just grayed out with the red square.
