Ricardisimo: Updating to grub2 was a one-time fix for me when I tried it a
couple months ago. After a second try, ubuntu once again was failing to boot.
However, with the Lucid release this issue seems to had some more attention
from other people new to ubuntu installing it, and coincidentally I found a fix.

Instructions reposted here:

To get into Ubuntu in the first place without using a LiveCD:
1. When you see the purple box with the little keyboard and person, hit a key
to enter options.
2. Choose your language.
3. Verify you have chosen "Try Ubuntu without any changes."
4. Press F6.
5. Press Esc to get out of the menu that pops up.
6. Go to the end of the commandline (with arrow keys if necessary) and type:
"i915.modeset=1" (no quotes).
7. Hit Enter and pray hard.

If you receive an error message at this point that says "Ubuntu is
running in low graphics mode." Click OK, and then choose to
"Troubleshoot the error". Then choose to "Edit the configuration file".
Change "vesa" to "intel" and click ok. Then I "closed", "cancelled" and
the hit "Restart X".

To fix Grub and permanently remove this error:
Now you need to edit your GRUB config to make that change permanent. To edit
your GRUB config, open terminal and type this command:
sudo gedit /etc/default/grub
Add "i915.modeset=1" to this line and save:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash i915.modeset=1"
Update GRUB in terminal by this command:
sudo update-grub
Reboot.
