Yes, I was. Sorry for the confusion. As additional info, it did format parts of the usb (sata) disk after all. Several files were corrupted. I deleted them but couldn't empty the trash. I couldn't delete the trash with sudo konqueror ore even with sudo rm -r /dev/trash/*. I ended up needing to save the files I could and then reformat the drive.
