Thank you for your suggestions.  I have enabled anything called compiz in the 
Synaptic Package Manager.  Also, my computer (sadly) uses integrated graphics 
(until I can afford to upgrade).  There are no proprietary drivers listed.  
Strangely enough, the desktop screen now has a blank vertical strip on the far 
right side of the screen.  I wonder if this is more than just a firefox 
problem.  If necessary, I am willing to go back to an earlier version of 
Ubuntu.  Thank you.
