Thanks Bryce, I'll be installing Lucid soon to test this. In the meantime, a colleague on the same hardware who has already upgraded to Lucid reports that the duplicate pointer issue went away, but that rotating the secondary screen caused a scrambling of the image on the screen as the pointer moved.
I remember a similar issue on this hardware back with 9.04.
