I think I have found the issue. Has something to do with the ~/.gvfs folder.
I deleted this folder, logged out and now its working. perhaps having a real .gvfs folder messes up gvfs (and fuse cant mount ~/.gvfs ) and then rhythmbox cant mount the iphone in there. In anycase this would actually be a bug with gvfs (or fuse) and not rhythmbox?
