i can't remember what the issue was. I'm not game to update to the new
Ubuntu as 9.10 is working well for me at the moment and I don't want to
wreck anything.

I really don't trust updates because, when I first started using Ubuntu
in January this year, I ran the update manager and wrecked the system,
having to reinstall.

I tried the "apport" line you mentioned and got back a whole lot of
emails. Not sure what they meant as I'm not technical.
