I have this same problem in both karmic and lucid. The problem is that the vpn server doesn't require username and pass, only group.
So even if i use "weak" it is not working. At this point, the CLI command works with if I "enable single DES" or if I issue the command with --enable-1des when it asks me for the user and pass, just press enter and it works.
