Here is an exact description of the problem: While Suspend-to-RAM works after a recent pm-utils fix, there is no hibernate option in the GNOME menu. Executing pm-hibernate from the terminal results either a) in a system apparently hibernating correctly, but then booting from scratch (and checking HDD drives!) or b) in a message "cannot hibernate".
