I think you're right. There is a side effect. ejabberdctl script check for 
/var/lib/ejabberd/.erlang.cookie to modify HOME var.
It may be a bad idea to move it.

My first reaction was "I won't symlink from /var/lib/ejabberd for a disk usage 
preference, but there is a user and a home, and home contains data, let's move 
the home, all will be fine"
After the usermod -m -d /home/ejabberd ejabberd, well, things was not fine. So 
I just followed my first idea to solve problems without re asking myself if I 
was in the right path to do that.
