I agree that the duplicate is completely wrong.
But I also had the same issue as the bug reporter after I installed a Ati
Radeon HD 5450 on my system.
Here is all I needed to do on my Karmic install to get my sound back:
in your /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf add a line
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel (alternatively for digital output: alias
snd-card-1 snd-hda-intel)
then do a
killall pulseaudio
and
sudo alsa force-reload
After that I had my sound back, but in the PulseAudio sound preferences
my sound card still doesn't appear.
