Hurrah muchos kudos to the sys admin who suggested it. Works great for me. I noticed when the icons at the bottom off the screen come up (keyboard? and stick man in circle) you do need to press a key to get the ubuntu install/live choices to come up so that you can add the extra option onto the cmd line.
