I ran the command xrandr while in failsafe.  1024x768
I updated the file /etc/default/grub with the line
GRUB_GFXMODE=1024x768,640x480

My old Dell laptop now boots into 1024x768.  I am not sure this
configuration is "optimal" but it looks OK to me and will at least now
allow me to start looking at the rest of 10.04.

Please let me know if you need me to email you any other details, logs
or test a specific setting.  Your help is appreciated.
