I get very similar behaviour. This is on a fresh install of 10.04 64bit. After a couple of switches between user A and B I just get a black screen after clicking on the switcher. Expect to get the password prompt but sit there waiting until I get bored. Have to kill the machine (power button for 4 seconds) then reboot.
