CyrusCT and dORSY, The settings Cyrus gave me worked like a charm. I now get update notifications on the tray icon as I did with my previous version of the Ubuntu Desktop product. It notifies for any pending updates.
I do realize this not a "fix". It is merely a work-around for a problem that is not a real problem. It's just a design intent (that I don't like) and feels like a bug until you come here and read these 58 posts on the topic. Either way - I would vote for the change on a poll as well. This design change ( in my humble opinion ) feels like someone decided to fix a problem (by changing the flow and presentation of updates) that didn't exist. Basically, it feels, like a solution looking for a problem instead of the other way around. Thanks again Cyrus for providing me exactly the information needed to help me to modify these settings. I learned a good deal about the gconf- editor and the "run" dialog.
