Till, I'm sure I haven't uninstalled it, perhaps it is installed on a
clean install of 10.04. I booted up 8.04 and then used the 10.04 cd to
update to 10.04.

Matt, you only need to repeat post #58, nothing prior so

System/Admin/Synaptic to load cups-driver-gutenprint, if it's already there you 
have a different problem to me.
then
System/Admin/Printing - remove printer with right click then delete, then use 
add to put it back.
