I have a similar problem. I haven't any floppy and I reinstalled from scratch the Amd64 version (I had the 32 bit version before) of Lucid and it seemed to work out until now. Suddendly, after a reboot, the system came to use 1,8 Gb of RAM where it used about 300 Mb before, and the CPU load rose from 0-1% to 15% when I'm not doing anything. In fstab there was... a floppy!!. I don't have a clue, that's for sure, but if there's any data I can gather that can be of help, just tell me how and I'll do it.
